Passport Photo Guidelines

Guidelines When Taking Your Passport & Visa Photos

 

  • Good quality colour file for both printing and digital applications.
  • Appropriate brightness and contrast showing your skin tones naturally
  • Taken by a commercial photographer.
  • Clear, sharp and in focus. Photos may be in colour or in black and white.
  • Taken with a neutral facial expression (eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no smiling).
  • Taken with uniform lighting and not show shadows, glare or flash reflections.
  • Taken straight on, with face and shoulders centered and squared to the camera.
  • Taken in front of a plain white or light-coloured background with a clear difference between your face and the background. Photos must reflect/represent natural skin tones.
  • Original photos that are not altered in any way or taken from an existing photo.
  • Reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months).

Glasses - It is preferable that you do not wear your glasses in your passport photo. If preferred Capture That Photographics will take your photo with glasses, however the following guidelines apply:

  • They must show your eyes clearly
  • There should be no flash reflection off the glasses
  • Lenses should not be tinted
  • Heavy framed glasses should not be worn
  • Frames should not cover any part of your eyes
  • No sunglasses
  • If any of the above apply, you will be instructed by the photographer to remove your glasses.

Head Coverings - The photograph must show you without any hat or other head covering. However, if you wear a head covering for religious reasons The Passport Office will accept a photograph of you wearing it, but your facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of your face must be clearly shown.

Children and Babies - Children and babies are welcome. Pricing starts from $26.95. We have special facilities for babies.  No appointments are necessary as passport photos and visa photos are often ready with 5-10 minutes. Guidelines For Baby/Child Passport & Visa Photos

 

  • Child photos must follow the same rules indicated above. (unless they are under the age of 4mths)
  • Photos must show the child's head and shoulders only.
  • Parent's or child's hands must not appear in the photo.
  • Passport offices recognizes the difficulty in obtaining a neutral expression of a newborn and will allow for some tolerance in this regard.
  • There must be no shadows on the face or shoulders, around the ears or in the background.

If the following apply:

Glasses - It is preferable that your child does not wear his/her glasses in their passport photo. If preferred Capture That Photographics will take the photo with glasses, however the following guidelines apply:

We are open from 8:00am-4:00pm Monday-Thursday and Friday 8am-2pm. Saturday & Sunday are available by appointment only (please note additional fee applies for weekend services). We are located within the Business Service Tower on Level 10 Suite 7 (right near the us consulate) MLC Centre 19-29 Martin Place. No appointments are necessary as passport and visa photographs are often ready with 5-10 minutes.
